The Foundation’s partnership with the University of Waterloo connects education, professional experience and service to communities.

The Foundation

Change Makers in Co-op

Change Makers in Co-op helps selected Waterloo students take part in international nonprofit work experiences. Funded by The Steele Family Foundation, the program addresses financial barriers that can make these placements difficult to access.

Waterloo describes a CAD $10,000 award for eligible in-person placements outside Canada and the United States. Students gain professional experience while contributing to nonprofit organisations and learning about the communities they serve.

The Foundation

A connection with lasting purpose

Michael Steele is a University of Waterloo civil engineering alumnus, BASc ’81. His connection to the university and experience of co-operative education helped shape the Foundation’s interest in learning through practical experience.

University reporting has also documented Foundation support for athletic awards, including the Catherine and Feridun Hamdullahpur Athletic Excellence Awards.

The Foundation

From opportunity to experience

A June 2025 Foundation story followed Waterloo co-op students supporting refugee education in Thailand. It is one example of the program’s goal: helping students develop as globally aware citizens while contributing their skills to meaningful work.
